CHAPTER 17

Jarkat City

“Duchess Jenovene, you have my attention,” I told her.

“In private, Jenovene or Lady Jenovene is fine.” I almost rolled my eyes at her flipping a switch and returning to the ways of the court. She smoothed her leathers and asked, “Do your minions talk to you?”

I could hear a hesitation in her tone. Normally, she managed her emotions better - she was a trained princess.

“Uh no. Asha alluded that he could talk to other skeletons when he was one, but I think that’s it. Why?”

“It would make this easier. What did you order them to do?” she asked.

I rubbed the back of my neck in thought and then said, “Oh, this is about the werewolves I set to slaughter. They’re pretty savage.” I checked my casualty report and my stomach fell. So many dead among the lidka, and when I read down the list, I grunted. “Holy shit, there’s only a few hundred left.”

“Yeah, about that. How come you’re not claiming the dead or rising new minions?” she asked.

“Oh, that one is easy. To fill the treasury, and to allow time to harvest the meat before I select those to replace our losses with. No runners are yelling at me for reinforcements, so I’m trusting my commanders. Look, I can tell you’re upset. What happened?”

“Well, I can show you, but it’ll be safer if you take a minion.”

I huffed, seeing my breath clearly. The little nuances mattered, and I was thrilled that the blizzard was over.

I shifted to check on the ratkin and the wolfkin army. The armies consolidated to create a block of troops. Fires roared and the soldiers left in groups to gather more wood. The leaders huddled to discuss their next steps and I didn’t envy their position.

I glanced over to the lake and saw a feeding frenzy. The hydras who had died in the water bobbed, shifted, and jostled as their brethren consumed them.

“The fighting may not be over, and I’m waiting for them to fly the yellow. Just tell me for now,” I ordered.

“Yes, your Grace, but seeing is believing. We were harvesting the dead before you raised the wolfkin. After, we continued to find what we could to help. A few minutes later, I saw them all pause. They tilted their heads back to howl silently, as if they could hear each other. Your minions rushed to certain spots in the city then went down. It was odd. Only the wolfkin did. My team followed them into a descending tunnel behind a church. The sounds...” She paused, inhaling a few deep breaths.

“Uh, is everything okay?” I asked.

“Yes, you need to see it for yourself or hear it from me. The defenders of the breeding program, they’re out there. I don’t think they expected to be attacked from above. The minions died by the dozen to knock down the initial defenses, and then it was a massacre. There's over fifty-thousand orbs down there, and at least fifty of them are queens,” Jenovene managed.

“Alright, Nee will handle it, and -”

“I don’t want Jorma to see the dead,” Jenovene pleaded.
